District-level Meteorology Club inaugurated in Patuakhali for child-centered early disaster warning

Patuakhali: To ensure active participation of children in combating climate change-related disasters, a district-level Meteorology Club (Met Club) has been inaugurated in Patuakhali.
The event was organized by Save the Children Bangladesh and JAGO NARI, Rimes, Bangladesh Meteorological Department under the Child Centered Anticipatory Action Project implemented with the funding of the German Federal Foreign Office (GFFO) at the Student-Teacher Auditorium of Patuakhali University of Science and Technology on Saturday (December 20) morning.
The event was attended by Bangladesh Meteorological Department Director Md. Momenul Islam, Deputy Director S. M. Kamrul Hasan and Meteorologist Muhammad Abul Kalam Mallick, Chairman of the Department of Environmental Science of Patuakhali University of Science and Technology Professor Dr. Ahmed Parvez, Patuakhali District Education Officer Md. Mujibur Rahman, Senior Officer of RAIMES Muhammad Tanzilur Rahman, representatives of Save the Children Bangladesh and associated partner organizations, and CE of JAGO NARI Hosne Ara Hasi, along with government officials, meteorologists, academicians and students participated.
At the inaugural ceremony, students of Met Club presented a presentation and presentation on Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) website and Met Club website. Students from Patuakhali and Kalapara shared their experiences on weather data analysis, understanding forecasts and disseminating child-friendly early warning messages.

In the cultural part of the program, patriotic songs performed by students from Kalapara Upazila, poetry recitation by students from Patuakhali Sadar and serious performances on Met Club and anticipatory action attracted the guests.
The chief guest of the program was Md., Director of Bangladesh Meteorological Department. Momenul Islam said, “Bangladesh is a disaster-prone country. If children are involved in early preparedness activities, the future generation will become more aware, capable and disaster-tolerant.”
Speaking as a special guest, Muhammad Tanzilur Rahman, Senior Officer of RAIMES, said that if early disaster warning messages are disseminated through children, it is possible to reach the society more quickly, effectively and sustainably.
Professor Dr. Ahmed Parvez, Chairman of the Department of Environmental Science, Patuakhali University of Science and Technology, highlighted the importance of climate education and the use of scientific information at the local level.

Speaking as a special guest, Patuakhali District Education Officer (DEO) Md. Mujibur Rahman said that the Met Club is a timely and commendable initiative to make students aware and skilled about disasters.
Muhammad Abul Kalam Mallick, Meteorologist of the Bangladesh Meteorological Department, discussed the technical aspects of weather forecasting and early warning systems.
In addition, BMD Deputy Director SM Kamrul Hasan said that child-friendly weather information and forecasts for children will play an important role in reducing disaster risks in the future. In his closing speech, Hosne Ara Hasi, president of the event and CE of JAGO NARI, said that this Met Club will play an effective role in increasing children’s knowledge about weather and developing their leadership in disaster preparedness.
