Thousands of fishermen in the coastal region of Bangladesh migrate to the rivers and seas every day in search of livelihood. But due to tides, river erosion, cyclones and adverse weather conditions, anchoring boats, embarking and disembarking passengers and goods, and safely leaving the place in times of emergency has been a big challenge for them for a long time. Considering this reality, JAGO NARI has taken the initiative to build floating boat jetties for the coastal community, following the concept of modern and safe water transport infrastructure of the developed world.

Under the Anticipatory Action Project implemented in collaboration with Oxfam in Bangladesh, initially 6 floating boat jetties have been built in Barguna Sadar Upazila. This innovative infrastructure will facilitate the daily travel of fishermen and create an opportunity for quick and safe evacuation during disasters.

The floating boat jetty will allow fishermen to easily dock and anchor their boats during high and low tides. This will ensure safe movement of fishermen and passengers. The transportation of fish, agricultural products and other goods will be easier at this boat jetty. The construction of the floating boat jetty will increase the opportunity to quickly move to a safe place during the forecast of cyclones and tidal waves. It will ensure safe travel for women, children, the elderly and people with disabilities. It will further stimulate the local economy and livelihoods.

JAGO NARI believes that taking measures to reduce risks before a disaster is much more effective than responding after it. Therefore, as part of anticipatory action, these floating boat jetties are not just an infrastructure, but a new paradigm for the safety, dignity and sustainable livelihood of coastal people.
