Today, 20 July 2026, JAGO NARI’s Resilience Innovation Program (RIP) organized a six-monthly review meeting at Pathshala. The meeting was inaugurated by the Chief Executive of JAGO NARI.

The meeting was attended by Mr. Md. Al Mamun Azad, Head of Khulna Field Office, World Food Programme (WFP); Ms. Tasnim Tabassum, Programme Associate, WFP; Mr. Duke Ivn Amin, Director of Communication and Resource Mobilization, JAGO NARI; and members of the JAGO NARI Resilience Innovation Program team. Project Leads from other JAGO NARI projects also participated in the review meeting.

The discussion focused on the progress achieved during the past six months, including a Target vs. Achievement review based on the Field Level Agreement (FLA). Participants also discussed key achievements, implementation challenges, lessons learned, and opportunities for future collaboration and programming in Barguna District.

Following the meeting, the WFP team, together with the Chief Executive of JAGO NARI and the Director of Communication and Resource Mobilization, visited the road from Potkhali Sluice Gate to the Ashrayan Ring Embankment in Dhalua Union, which had recently been damaged by heavy rainfall. During the field visit, they observed the condition of the affected road and discussed possible rehabilitation measures to restore safe access for the local community.

An intercommunication workshop was held in Kalapara Upazila of Patuakhali district to ensure youth development related services at the local level and strengthen coordination between service providers and youth communities. JAGO NARI’s PRODRIPTA Project organized this workshop with the technical assistance of CARE Bangladesh.

9 youth representatives from Mithaganj Union and 9 from Lalua Union under the PRODRIPTA Project of JAGO NARI participated in the workshop. In addition, members of various youth organizations based in Kalapara, local NGO representatives and relevant stakeholders were present. Representatives of AVASH and Friendship organizations also participated in the workshop.

Chairman of Mithaganj Union Parishad, Chairman of Lalua Union Parishad, Program Manager of CARE Bangladesh Md. Bayezid Bostami, Project Manager of JAGO NARI Mohammad Zafar Alam and journalist Milan Raju were present as special guests at the event.

The chief guest of the workshop was Kalapara Upazila Youth Development Officer Md. Julhas ul Azad. In his speech, he said that skill development training is currently provided in more than 41 trades through the Youth Development Department. He urged the youth present to keep in regular contact with the Upazila Youth Development Office to receive these trainings and government services. He also detailed the various activities of the Youth Development Department for self-employment, skill development and entrepreneurship.

The main objective of the workshop was to increase effective communication between youth and government service providers, create awareness about existing government services and strengthen mutual cooperation and coordination between various youth organizations. A group work exercise was organized with the participants in the workshop. In this, youth representatives of different unions presented their opinions and action plans on the opportunities to work together at the local level, increase coordination with government institutions, take social development initiatives and the possibility of jointly implementing activities in the future.

The participants said that such workshops have created an opportunity for them to learn about government services and will play an important role in increasing mutual communication and cooperation between various youth organizations.

The workshop concluded successfully with active participation, open exchange of views, and a commitment to implement integrated initiatives in the future.

JAGO NARI is a non-governmental development organization operating in the coastal areas of Bangladesh. Bangladesh is one of the world’s most vulnerable countries to the effects of global climate change. A recent report has found that Bangladesh is facing serious disasters due to the dual pressures of high population density and climate change, which have put the country’s public health and livelihoods at extreme risk.

The Population Institute has published this new report in the face of the extreme adverse effects of climate change worldwide. The report, titled “Population and Climate Change Vulnerability: Understanding Current Trends to Enhance Rights and Resilience” (2026 Edition), shows that the population growth rate in 80 countries at risk from climate change is double the global average (1.6 percent).

JAGO NARI provided information on the coastal areas of Bangladesh in the report.

Other Countries

The report highlights case studies of five countries that are taking innovative steps to combat climate change. Niger is the world’s second most climate-vulnerable country, with high temperatures and droughts hampering agricultural production. JVE Niger advocates for the inclusion of youth and children’s voices in climate policy. The Philippines experiences an average of 20 cyclones a year. PATH Foundation Philippines Inc. is working to integrate gender equality and reproductive health services to build coastal resilience. Uganda’s Regenerate Africa is working to build climate resilience. The United States has research and initiatives on the resilience of campuses to the impacts of climate change and its social risks.

Risk profile: Cyclones and displacement

According to the 2026 report, Bangladesh is one of the most densely populated countries in the world, with about 3,500 people per square mile. Although only 1 percent of the world’s cyclones hit Bangladesh, they account for 53 percent of the global cyclone-related deaths. Sea level rise and salinity are destroying freshwater sources and agricultural land in coastal areas. Bangladesh is expected to lose 11 percent of its land area and displace 18 million people by 2050 due to a sea level rise of about 19.6 inches.

The report identifies Bangladesh as one of the most climate-vulnerable and densely populated countries in the world. Women’s safety and health risks increase during climate-related disasters. There is evidence of an increase in child marriage and gender-based violence in the aftermath of disasters.

Gender-based risks and public health disasters

Women and adolescents in Bangladesh are the most affected by the impact of climate change. Women’s access to healthcare is hampered during disasters, which puts their reproductive health and dignity at risk. Many women and adolescents are subjected to inhumane conditions due to the lack of essential reproductive health supplies and confidentiality during disasters. The report reveals that in many cases, women are forced to resort to unsafe methods to prevent unwanted pregnancies or stop their periods, which increases their long-term health risks. In addition, the rates of child marriage and gender-based violence are also increasing at an alarming rate due to poverty and loss of livelihood.

JAGO NARI and integrated initiatives in the solution

The report highlights the activities of an organization called ‘Jago Nari’ (JAGO NARI) in the coastal region of Bangladesh as a successful model in climate adaptation. Through their activities, the organization:

Provides special corners and necessary materials for menstrual health management (MHM) in cyclone shelters and schools.

Ensures emergency services for pregnant and lactating mothers.

Regularly advocates with local administrations to build gender-sensitive infrastructure (such as separate toilets, adequate lighting and security) during disasters.

Working to develop the leadership of adolescent girls and young women and raise awareness about reproductive health and rights.

What’s next?

Experts say that to make Bangladesh’s climate adaptation plans more effective, infrastructure development alone is not enough. It must also integrate gender equality, reproductive health and rights, and population issues. It is now time to scale up these innovative grassroots initiatives for a sustainable future.

To combat the adverse effects of climate change, 360 beneficiaries, most of whom are women, have received climate-adaptive agriculture support in Kalapara and Rangabali upazilas of Patuakhali district under the PRODRIPTA project.

Through this support, the beneficiaries are getting the opportunity to adapt to climate change by practicing sustainable agriculture, producing safe food and increasing family income. Increasing the skills and participation of women in agriculture will play an important role in their economic empowerment and ensuring food and nutritional security of the family.

At the same time, Jagonari has established a community market named “PALKI” to ensure fair prices for the agricultural products produced by farmers and to strengthen the local market system. Through this initiative, farmers, especially women agricultural entrepreneurs, are getting the opportunity to sell their produce directly in the local market, which is playing a significant role in increasing their income and sustainable livelihoods.

JAGO NARI is implementing the PRODRIPTA project with technical assistance from CARE Bangladesh, through which work is being done to increase climate resilience and ensure sustainable livelihoods of coastal communities.

JAGO NARI organized a one-day workshop titled Cyclone Shelters and Format Development” under the Women Lead in Emergencies (WLiE) project.

The workshop was attended by CPP Deputy Director, UDMC members, CPP volunteers, community representatives, CARE Bangladesh, JAGO NARI’s management and project officers.

The participants analyzed the current status, challenges, resources and roles of stakeholders in cyclone shelters and jointly prepared data collection formats for Survey, FGD and KII.

This initiative will play a significant role in making cyclone shelter management more effective, participatory and evidence-based.

The WLiE Project is being implemented by JAGO NARI with technical assistance from CARE Bangladesh and funding from AFD - Agence Française de Développement.

On 30 June 2026, JAGO NARI’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) 2026 was successfully held at JAGO NARI Training and Research Center, Barguna.

The meeting was attended by the members of the esteemed Advisory Council of JAGO NARI, members of the General Council and invited guests. The members of the esteemed Advisory Council present were Dr. Matiur Rahman and Monir Hossain Kamal.

In the meeting, a new 7-member Executive Board was elected democratically for the next three years (2026–2029). The newly elected Executive Board is: Adv. Selina Akhter – President, Ferdousi Anu – Vice-President, Hosne Ara Hasi – General Secretary, Shamima Nasrin – Co-General Secretary, Adv. Nargis Parveen Surma – Treasurer, Maksuda Begum Chobi – Executive Member and Shahnaz – Executive Member.

The election process was conducted in a fair, impartial and transparent manner by the esteemed members of the Election Commission. The Election Commission consisted of Adv. Ranjuara Sipu – Chief Election Commissioner, Hamida Begum – Assistant Election Commissioner and Nigat Sultana Azad – Assistant Election Commissioner.

In addition, the budget of Jagonari for the next fiscal year, various organizational policies and important administrative issues were unanimously approved in the meeting.

JAGO NARI is a completely women-led and women-focused organization. Since its inception, women have been in the main responsibilities of the organization’s general assembly, executive council and leadership. The main philosophy of JAGO NARI is to ensure women’s rights, empowerment, leadership development and participation of women in decision-making. The organization has been working tirelessly for the past 28 years to improve the quality of life of women, children and vulnerable populations in coastal Bangladesh, reduce disaster risk, climate resilience and humanitarian assistance.

Most of the members of the General Council and the newly elected Executive Council of JAGO NARI are long-time social workers. They have voluntarily dedicated their valuable time of life to establish the rights of marginalized women, children and disadvantaged people in the coastal region, social justice, humanitarian assistance and women’s empowerment. Their experience, leadership and dedication are the greatest strengths of JAGO NARI.

JAGO NARI believes that good governance, transparency, accountability, women’s leadership and participatory decision-making are the foundation of building a strong and sustainable organization.

The meeting sincerely congratulated the newly elected Executive Council. At the same time, sincere gratitude was expressed to the members of the Advisory Council, Election Commission, General Council, staff, volunteers and all well-wishers. Through the collective efforts of all, JAGO NARI is committed to establishing the rights of women and children, increasing disaster resilience, and building a more equal and just society in the days to come.

A project coordination meeting was held under the Gender Equality Transforms Climate Action (GETCA) project being implemented in Barisal Division. All project officers of Jago Nari and Nazrul Smriti Sangsad (NSS) from Barguna, Patuakhali and Barisal districts participated in the meeting.

Hosne Ara Hasi, Chief Executive, Jago Nari was present as the chief guest. He inaugurated the meeting and highlighted the importance of increasing women’s leadership and participation in combating climate change.

All Upazila Coordinators, Finance Officers and District Coordinators of Nazrul Smriti Sangsad (NSS) from Barisal and Patuakhali districts and Jago Nari from Barguna district were present in the meeting. The meeting was moderated by Md. Abir Hossain, Monitoring Officer, Wave Foundation.

Important discussions were held through this coordination meeting to review the progress of project implementation, exchange of experiences and further strengthen climate resilient and gender equality-based initiatives.
