JAGONARI shortlisted for Sasakawa Award 2025
Jagonari has been shortlisted for the Sasakawa Award 2025, the most prestigious global award for disaster risk reduction. The final winner will be announced at the GPDRR (Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction) to be held in Geneva, Switzerland on June 5, 2025.
Jagonari is one of the five non-governmental development organizations in the world shortlisted for the award. The others are Aquatic Service (Madagascar), Church Agencies Network – Disaster Operations (CAN-DO) (Australia), Global Network of Civil Society Organizations for Disaster (GNDR) (Global/UK) and World Institute on Disability (WID) (Global/US).
Such recognition on the global stage proves that innovative solutions developed at the local level can make a difference worldwide. This remarkable achievement by Jagonari is a huge recognition for the people of coastal areas of Bangladesh, especially the long journey of building climate resilience and disaster resilience, led by women.
The Sasakawa Prize for Disaster Risk Reduction was established in 1986 with the support of the Nippon Foundation to recognize outstanding contributions to building disaster-resilient communities and reducing disaster risk, along with the WHO Sasakawa Health Prize and the UNEP Sasakawa Environment Prize.
This year, nearly 200 nominations were received from around the world for the Sasakawa Award. The distinguished jury panel of the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) shortlisted five NGOs from around the world based on the exceptionally high quality of their work.
Jagonari started its journey in 1998 in the coastal district of Barguna, Bangladesh. With the main theme of women’s empowerment, the organization works on issues such as disaster risk reduction, climate change, women’s empowerment and child rights, education, health, etc. Jagonari’s programs prioritize the views of and work with people affected by disasters.
Grateful to all our staff and volunteers, partners, fellow warriors, and brave coastal residents — whose inspiration has made Jagonari where it is today.
