LAPA field activities to tackle climate change have begun

The field level activities of the ‘Local Adaptation Plan of Action (LAPA)’ project have begun with the aim of determining sustainable adaptation strategies at the district level to address the impacts of climate change. JAGO NARI is implementing this project with the financial and technical assistance of the ‘International Rescue Committee (IRC). The activities of this project have started through ‘Community Consultation Meetings’.
The main objective of these meetings is to collect information about the current status, challenges and ways of adaptation of the following issues from the experience and reality of the local community. The issues are - water resources, disaster management and social security, agriculture sector, fisheries, aquaculture and livestock, environment, wetlands and biodiversity, etc.
Through these meetings, it is known how the impact of climate change is being felt in the relevant areas, what kind of adaptation strategies are the local people adopting, what kind of support they are receiving for climate adaptation and what kind of support is needed in the future.
These consultation meetings will also start in Kalapara Upazila from next week. The meetings are being organized separately with women’s groups, men’s groups, mixed groups, union parishad members and youth groups, so that the experiences and opinions of people from all classes and professions come to the fore.
In the next phase of the project, awareness workshops on the National Adaptation Plan (NAP) will be held with the participation of relevant government and private stakeholders at the Rangabali and Kalapara Upazilas and Patuakhali district levels. Through these workshops, the knowledge and participation of the concerned on the National Adaptation Plan (NAP) and Local Adaptation Plan of Action (LAPA) will further increase.
As part of this process, Key Informant Interviews (KII) will be held with the heads of relevant government departments at the upazila and, if necessary, district levels. These interviews will provide policy and technical perspectives and will enrich the information obtained at the field level by verifying and selecting it.

Finally, separate validation workshops will be organized at the upazila and district levels, where the final ‘Local Adaptation Plan of Action (LAPA)’ will be prepared based on the feedback from all stakeholders.
This plan will be considered as an important policy document for climate adaptation in Patuakhali district. Later, the International Rescue Committee (IRC) will conduct advocacy activities at the policy-making level to include this local adaptation concept in the National Adaptation Plan (NAP).

An attempt is being made to formulate a realistic and sustainable local adaptation plan by ensuring the participation of the local people at every stage of this plan, which will play an important role in ensuring climate-resilient development.
