Enhancing Community Preparedness through Shelter Management Training in Coastal Districts
JAGO NARI, in collaboration with the International Organization for Migration (IOM), has launched a comprehensive Shelter Management Training program across the districts of Noakhali, Laxmipur, and Feni. This initiative aims to build the capacity of local Shelter Management Committees (SMCs), equipping them with essential knowledge and skills to effectively manage community shelters during emergencies, particularly in the face of recurring natural disasters.
Through these training sessions, participants are learning about their roles and responsibilities in shelter operations—before, during, and after a disaster. Special emphasis is being placed on enhancing coordination mechanisms, ensuring each member understands how to work collectively to prepare, respond, and support their communities during evacuations.
As part of the training, logistical support items are being handed over to individual participants to enhance their personal preparedness. These supplies are expected to help them respond more confidently and efficiently when disasters strike.
This initiative will directly strengthen the capacity of over 250 shelters in the coastal belt—ensuring that thousands of vulnerable people will have access to better-managed, safer shelters during cyclones, floods, and other emergencies.
By empowering local actors, JAGO NARI continues its mission to build resilient communities in Bangladesh’s most disaster-prone regions, promoting a culture of readiness, responsibility, and community-led action.
