FARRM School is the hope of farmers in climate-vulnerable coastal areas

FARRM School is an initiative that supports farmers in moving from traditional farming practices to more climate-smart and anticipatory agriculture. Previously, many farmers faced losses due to limited access to modern technology, lack of weather information, and weak connection with the Department of Agricultural Extension. Because of this, they could not take the right decisions at the right time.
Under this initiative, 200 farmers from 8 unions, with 25 farmers in each union, are involved in regular sessions. Every month, two sessions are conducted in each union by Sub-Assistant Agriculture Officers from the Department of Agricultural Extension. These sessions focus on seasonal crop cultivation, pest and disease management, and improved farming practices.
Farmers are trained to use the BAMIS Portal/App to access weather forecasts and advisories. This helps them take early decisions such as sowing seeds at the right time, harvesting crops before rainfall, and applying pest control measures properly. These actions help reduce risks and prevent losses by shifting from reactive responses to anticipatory action based on weather information.
The evidence of success is reflected in farmers’ improved ability to use weather forecasts for decision-making, which has led to timely harvesting before rainfall, proper scheduling of seed sowing, reduced crop damage, and better pest management practices. Farmers are also experiencing lower financial losses and improved productivity, while support from the Department of Agricultural Extension, including rice seeds, nutrition garden inputs, mung bean, and sunflower cultivation support, has further strengthened their capacity and crop diversification.

As a result, farmers are now more skilled, aware, and financially stable. They are able to reduce crop losses, increase yield, and improve their income. FARRM School is helping farmers build resilience and improve their livelihoods through better knowledge, anticipatory action, and stronger linkage with agricultural services.
