Green initiative of youth to protect the coast

On the occasion of World Environment Day 2026, with the determination to combat the adverse effects of climate change and create a green and safe environment, JAGO NARI is implementing a tree plantation program in three upazilas of Barguna.
Trees act as an important natural defense system to combat the risks of river erosion, storm surges, and climate change in coastal areas. Tree plantation in areas adjacent to river banks and embankments will play an important role in preventing soil erosion, preserving the environment, and reducing disaster risks.
Under the Gender Equality Transformative Climate Action (GETCA) project, a tree plantation program was implemented on 04 June 2026 in the embankment area of East Kalmegha River in Kalmegha Union of Patharghata Upazila of Barguna District and in Ramna Union of Bamna Upazila under the initiative of youth to combat the adverse effects of climate change, increase climate resilience of coastal communities and ensure women’s empowerment. Organized with the overall support of JAGO NARI and Wave Foundation, various species of medicinal, fruit and palm trees were planted in this program to protect the riverbank and coastal environment. This initiative, implemented with the active participation of local people, public representatives, forest department, journalists and various stakeholders, is expected to play an important role in reducing the risk of river erosion, conserving biodiversity, maintaining environmental balance and increasing climate adaptation capacity in the long term.
The youth of Patharghata Upazila are continuously implementing various innovative and effective initiatives to combat the adverse effects of climate change, increase the climate resilience of coastal communities and ensure women’s empowerment.
Under the Gender Equality Transformative Climate Action (GETCA) project, with the goal of youth leadership, participation and establishing climate justice, an important tree plantation program was held today (04 June 2026) to protect the sustainable embankment on the banks of the East Kalmegha River in Kalmegha Union of Patharghata Upazila of Barguna. Through this program, various species of medicinal, fruit and palm trees were planted in the riverside area, which will play an important role in conserving the environment, protecting biodiversity, reducing the risk of river erosion and combating the adverse effects of climate change.

Organized as per the decisions taken in the regular youth meeting, the local people, Union Parishad, Forest Department, journalist community and various stakeholders actively participated in this initiative. Especially, the families whose trees have been planted around their homes have been involved in the care, protection and conservation of the trees, so that the initiative is sustainable in the long term.
The program was attended by local dignitaries, youth representatives and people from different classes and professions, including the General Secretary of the Upazila Lok Morcha Committee and journalist Mr. Md. Shahidul Islam Khokon. Before implementing the program, the youth representatives took advice from the Forest Department, Union Parishad, UP members and local leaders through several opinion exchange meetings. Later, all the necessary preparations including the collection of saplings, construction of protective fences were completed by the volunteers of the youth.
JAGO NARI and Wave Foundation have provided overall support to this initiative. This tree plantation program led by the youth will be a shining and exemplary example of climate adaptation and sustainable development.
