FARRM School (ফার্ম স্কুল): A Community-Based Initiative to Strengthen Farmers’ Disaster Resilience in Coastal Areas
FARRM School (Farmers’ Anticipatory Resilience and Risk Management School) is an innovative educational platform designed for coastal farmers to enhance their knowledge and capacity in disaster risk reduction (DRR), particularly in the context of cyclones and tidal surges. Under the Child-Centred Anticipatory Action Project, with the support of Save the Children International, regular training sessions are conducted by Sub-Assistant Agriculture Officers (SAAO). These officers tailor the content based on local cropping patterns and also serve as a vital link between the field-level realities and higher-level decision-makers.
In this context, JAGO NARI, in collaboration with the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE), Save the Children International, and with technical support from RIMES, has been conducting awareness sessions in the most vulnerable agricultural communities of coastal Bangladesh. These sessions aim to build a localized climate service infrastructure and strengthen the use of weather and climate information in agriculture.
Through this initiative, farmers gain critical knowledge about climate-related risks, potential threats of tidal surges, and early warning systems. Trained farmers are now adopting anticipatory farming techniques such as shifting planting schedules, early harvesting, mulching, using bamboo sticks to support plants during heavy rainfall, and protecting livestock.
This participatory learning model empowers farmers to make timely and informed decisions, reducing the adverse impacts of disasters on their livelihoods while also ensuring greater protection for children in vulnerable households.
